George Smith was born in Vicenza Italy when his father was stationed there in 1958. Georges grandparents owned a large farm in Rowan county NC. From his early days working on the farm, helping his parents in their yard, and being in the boy scouts for 9 years George developed a love for the outdoors, and it turned into a lifetime passion.
George moved to Jacksonville, NC when his father took a job as an engineer on Camp Lejeune in 1964. As fate would have it, his parents bought a Garden Center and small landscape company in Jacksonville when he was in the 11th grade. George went to college with the intention of being a doctor but after a year switched to landscape design.
George received degrees in Landscape Design and Turfgrass Management in 1980 from NC State University. After working for several companies, George opened his own company in 1992 during the aftermath of the hurricanes Bertha and Fran. In 2001 he bought a landscape company in Wilmington NC and operated both until they were sold to Mainscape out of Indianapolis in 2006 after both companies’ combined produced 4.75 million in 2005. In 2008 he quit working for Mainscape and helped open a Utility Construction Company in Onslow County. When the company moved, he left and worked at Grants Creek Nursery in Jacksonville for 8 years. George retired in 2017 to help his wife take care of her parents. After 3 years another family member moved close and he wanted to go back to work. He decided that ACL looked like a good fit for him and went back to work in the spring of COVID.
George has held the following license and certifications.
NC Landscape Contractor, NC Irrigation Contractor, NC Pesticide applicators license, Vista Low Voltage Lighting certification, Belgard ICPI Certification, NC Stormwater Management and Repair Certification
If he is not working George is probably fishing, gardening, visiting family, playing with the grandkids, or spending quality time with his wife Val.
